                    粉红湖

We have been together for more than 2 years, during that time we had been to more than 20 different places. This time, the trip to Cancun made me feel the amazing power of nature.

This trip was planned by my friend Sabrina. It suited my heart very well. We wanted to go to as many places as possible and experience Mexican culture but we only had limited time, so Sabrina delivered a well-planned wonderful travel plan.

Day 5,Back to USA

                Lets start!

                                                                            Dive into Cancun
Cancun is a very famous tourism city in Mexico. It is located by the beautiful Caribbean Ocean. And this place attracts a large number of international tourists every year.
In summary, there are two option for travelling in Cancun.

First:  Just for relax
You can book all-inclusive luxury hotel. In that way the only thing you need to think about is how to enjoy the bright sunshine and crystal-clear sea. Foods and beverage is complimentary in hotel, you can lie down on the beach with a glass of wine and immerse yourself into the relax.

Second:  For travel, try out the activities
You can book one-day tour to visit Chichén Itzá, Cenotes, and theme park. Or you can book a car and drive to any places you want to go. Any one of these places may takes whole day to visit. Therefore you just need to find a comfortable bed to sleep at night.

                Currency:

I suggest that you need to exchange peso of at least 400 USD for 5-day trip. Because when you eat street food and refuel the car, peso is the best choice for you spending. If you spend with dollar, sometimes people will charge you sky-high convenience fee plus an unfair exchange rate 20% lower than the prevailing exchange rate. Also most local hotels only accept cash payment in dollar or peso.

You should exchange money one or two months before the trip as most banks only provide exchange service by appointment. Otherwise you can withdraw cash and exchange to peso on your arrival to Cancun. The exchange rate in suburban areas of Cancun is unfair, you should check online and be careful with it.

                Transport:

We flied from Los Angeles to Cancun, which took about 5 hours. We decided to drive by ourselves since we don’t speak Spanish and it’s hard to rely on public transportation. Sabrina said self-drive is the best choice to travel in Cancun.

Car rental: we chose Avis and spent $30 for 5 days, but it costs $284 for insurance. Sabrina told us, Avis and other car rental companies always use cheap rental price to attract customers but usually ended up with much more fees on insurance. Forget about the CDW provided by your credit card company, the car rental company would still ask you to buy their “local” insurance or you’ll be in trouble when you meet policemen. So the only thing we can do is trying to bargain at the price for insurance.

When we arrive at rental place we were full ready to haggle over the price. It’s best to buy fully covered insurance, Sabrina said if we only by half-covered insurance, we may pay much more than the offset when we return the car for tiny scratch or dent.

We were told the fully cover insurance is $402, it was too much. Finally, we made a deal at $284.
Tip:  bargain in Cancun is very useful and important, when you want to buy something or do something, never forget to bargain
Alternatives: if you don't want to rent a car, you can book one-day tour online or book from your hotel concierge. But the price is much more expensive than driving by yourself.

                Hotel:

We didn’t want to stay at hotel for all day long, so we didn't choose all-inclusive hotel. There were a lot of luxury hotels with amazing design in Cancun. Also there were nice small boutique hotels with affordable price.

                Day1, Las Coloradans pink lake

                                                                            live in Chichén Itzá

                    粉红湖

Our flight arrived at 6 a.m., we went out from the custom around 7 a.m.. But Avis only opened at 8 a.m.. The rental reception was right in front of the exit. Then we took a shuttle bus to the rental office. It took us 40min to rent a car. After that we went to the nearest 711 to have breakfast. There was a currency exchange beside 711, listed with fair exchange rate.

Finally, we started our first day. Sabrina told us some police would try to blackmail tourist with the charges coming from nowhere. You should watch for this if you rent a car. They will stop you for no reason, and all they want is just money. When you meet them, the only thing you can do is to bargain. You should pretend to be poor and don’t show them how much cash in your wallet. They will scare you for putting you into jail or pay the $200 fine.

After 3 hours driving we arrived at the pink lake.

                    粉红湖

                    粉红湖

The pink lake was amazing, you can never find another place like that. Pink lake is a private owned property, if you want to walk by the lake and take picture, you have to hire a guide. It costs 50 pesos for one person. There are tour guides all around the entrance of the lake.
Las Coloradans means “the red “in Spanish. And why the color is pink? It is due to red colored algae, plankton, and brine shrimp that thrive in the salty environment.

                    粉红湖

We spend 2 hours at pink lake and the beach near the lake. It took 2 hours to drive to our hotel. The hotel was called Piste near Chihcen Itza. Hotel is small, clean and beautiful, and there were shops and restaurants right beside of it.

                                                                            live in Tulum

9 a.m., after we had breakfast we went to Chichen Itza, the earlier you go the fewer people there are. If you want to take pictures with Kukulcan Pyramid, so you should go early. Chihcen Itza is a must go places if you were a big fan of Maya culture. The pyramid was magnificent, I can hardly imagine building it with only human labor force.

                                                                            Chichen Itza: 8am-18:00 other season
           8am-17:30 winter
           Price: 245 pesos per person

After 2 hours visiting we went to Cenote Ik Kil. It was only 10 minutes’ drive from Chichen Itza. Since the swimming place is open to public and is located within a hotel, you have to pay an entrance fee before you get in. It was 26 meters below the ground level and looks awesome! Sometimes it makes you feel terrified when you look into the deep water. I’d recommend get there early so that you don’t have to wait in lines jumping into the chilling water.

You can save your stuff in a locker there. And enjoy the cheap and delicious buffet after swimming.

It took us another 2 hours to drive to Azulik hotel & Maya spa. I’m out of words to describe how amazing it was! Outside of the hotel, there are lots of restaurants and shops.

                Day 3, Cenote Dos Ojos.

Today is quite a relaxing day. We woke up with oceanic views. After lunch, we went to Cenote Dos Ojos.

Cenote Dos Ojos was operated as a theme park, it is best to drive your own car there otherwise you have to walk in dust for 20 minutes. There were 3~4 different Cenotes with different experience. The smallest but most beautiful one was Cenote Nicte-Ha, it costs 350 pesos per person. If you preferred deep diving and were not afraid of deep water, you can try Cenote Dos Ojos. Since we were going to have fun in Xplor theme park, we went to Cenote Nicte-Ha to enjoy the natural swimming pool and save our energy.

At night we moved to Maya Pax at Tulum. It was a B&B apartment with huge rooms and welcoming reception.

                Day 4, Xplor

There were many theme parks in Cancun such as Xcaret, Xplor, and Xhale. We chose Xplor in that we prefer excitement. We were required to wear a helmet during the explore. There were five rides in total: zipline, amphibious vehicles, underground rafts, underground rivers and hammock splash. Each one would takes approximately 1 hour, so take a good sleep the night before your exploration at Xplor! Try to avoid busy times, a smart arrangement will save you 2~3 hours in the line.
